Kalyuka -
russian overtone flute (Key A)
Lenght: 72.8 cm
Kalyuka is ancient russian overtone flute without the holes, without fipple
and with an embouchure notch.
This is my version of kalyuka. I improved and simplified its construction,
so now it is possible to play on it in a very advanced way.
I made it from plastic to increase the durability and decrease its price.
In Russia this instrument was usually made from special bush "borshevik"
and used only for one season , bacause it was very fragile. But for
professional use it's quite inapplicable.
Unlike traditional one, this model is highly durable. It's only one instrument
i know on which it's possible to play inside the water or at 40-degree frost
without losing the technical possibilities. And of course you can use it
professionally to perform and record.
I play my own kalyuka for 6 years and I'm completely satisfied with it.
This is one of my most favorite instruments in my huge collection. I like its
simplicity and endless music possibilities!
I build kalyukas in 6 keys. Here you can listen the sound of my kalyuka
flutes and choose which one you want to buy. Another keys
available by request.
How to Play Kalyuka:
we plan to make tutorial video for the kalyuka in near future. For now
please use this manual:
- Place the Kalyuka to your lower lip. The u-notch should rest
on the upper segment of your lower lip. Hold the kalyuka by your
left hand and fix it in stable position.
- Begin to blow straight out and try to direct the stream of air
to the edge of u-notch. Tilt the angle of the u-notch up and
down until it makes a whistling noise.
- Once you are able to get more or less stable sound, try to close
the bottom hole with the joined index and middle fingers of your
right hand (for A, G# kalyuka) or with the middle finger of your
right hand (for smaller D, C and G kalyukas). You will notice
the note change. In fact, scale of kalyuka is the combination of
2 overtone scales: one in open position and one in closed position.
- Find the base lowest note in open position, than start to overblow
(change the power of blowing)to get different notes, then close
the hole on the edge and do the same with it.
- Then try to switch between closed and opened positions and
overblowing in the same time to get the whole scale.
